Ok, now you are probably thinking…Julie, you have lost your marbles?
What fun is there in fear???
When you think about the greatest moments in your life – there was probably some fear attached to them. In fact, the day I got married was one of the best days of my life and it was for sure, accompanied by fear. The day I ran my 1st triathlon…unnerving… Giving birth to my 2 daughters…frightening. Stepping on the stage last year at Pepperdine University for my 1st Live Your Vision LIVE…totally scary. But they are some of THE most memorable days of my life and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.
Think about one of your greatest days. Most likely fear was right there with the greatness of it. In fact, it may have been because it elicited fear that it heightened the greatness of it. The greatest thrills come with the biggest risks.
No risk, no thrill.
Think about it this way, people pay money all the time to see scary movies, go on roller coaster rides, gamble – you name it. There is something so exhilarating about fear as well. It lets us know we are alive.
And far too many women I know complain about the monotony of their lives. How they long to be able to do something significant with what they’ve been given but they are trapped in this cycle of an endless and what feels like, meaningless to-do’s.
I am concerned that in our efforts to take care of ourselves and those around us, we seek shelter when we are actually called to LIVE and GIVE and make a difference! Which is always scary…in an exhilarating kind of way.
Ironically playing it safe – the alternative to fear is boredom.
The great philosopher and poet, Soren Kierkegaard claimed that “Boredom is the root of all evil.” My mother used to tell me something similar, “Idle hands are the devil’s playground.”
I tend to agree that when we are bored and not pressing forward in faith, we don’t feel the thrill of our own lives and can look with envy, jealousy, and resentment at others around us and then get critical. It’s so much easier to be the critic.
But at some point in your life you will have to make a choice:
Play it safe, be bored and die with regret…
OR
Step out in faith knowing that fear will accompany that choice and feel the thrill of being alive; confident you gave your all.
It’s entirely up to you.
As for me, I’m taking a faith walk and enjoying the thrill, and yes the fear, as I have resolved to step out daily facing my fears in an effort to give all God has given me.
Won’t you join me for some fun? Let’s do this thing!
