What is mental fitness? Why is it so important? And it’s something, whether you know it or not, that will affect the quality of your life significantly. It will also determine whether or not you ever see your vision become a sustainable reality. So for our purposes, it is an essential starting point and lifestyle.
Let’s discuss first of all what it is NOT.
It is not your IQ, your academic accomplishments, how much money you have made or managed, how loving and tolerant you are, your witty humor, or how much time you spend doing spiritual good works. It is not practicing word games, thinking puzzles, games of chess, praying to God, or memorizing scripture.
It is not attained through just physical exercise, much reading or studying, goal setting, serving others, or even a guarantee of being in a good family.
Why? Because we are seeing individuals with all these things in place that LACK what we are defining as mental fitness.
Though the things I mentioned before are all good things, they are not what we are talking about. These things may help, but they are not the measure of someone’s mental fitness.
Our definition of mental fitness is:
✅ Creating and sustaining a state of well-being, an awareness of how we think, behave, and feel, and an ability to handle stressors and surprises.
✅ Having mental and emotional buoyancy and resilience.
✅ Having a consistent clarity of mind, strong values identification, and bold decision-making capability.
✅ Having the ability to think on your feet when needed, the flexibility to see and consider others’ points of view, and the ability to focus and complete tasks without the constant interruptions of the inner dialogue of doubts and insecurities.
✅ Where you can be empathetic to the hurts of others without being taken out yourself. You can balance life’s tensions, understanding that joy and challenges are present daily.
Just as physical fitness provides us with an increased ability to respond to life in all its richness, mental fitness helps in the same way.
Doesn’t that just sound like a fantastic state of mind and place to be?
Well, this is what women we polled for our upcoming online virtual event asked us to speak to. This is what is foundational to being able to handle and hold a great new chapter. If you want more, you must become more.
